Common reasons why drivers run red lights

Running a red light endangers everyone on the road. When drivers ignore red lights, the risk of collisions rises for everyone.

Below are some of the most common reasons why drivers run red lights.

Distracted driving

Distracted driving is a serious issue in the U.S., and it causes many drivers to run red lights. Some drivers use their phones, eat or mess with GPS controls while driving. These distractions take their focus away from the road. Missing a signal can cause a driver to enter an intersection at a dangerous moment. This mistake increases the chance of hitting other vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians.

Impaired driving

Another common reason for running red lights is impaired driving. When a driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, their judgment and reaction times suffer. This means they might not notice the light change or may misinterpret the signal altogether. Impaired drivers often take longer to react, making it harder to stop in time when a red light appears.

Time pressures

Some drivers run red lights because they feel rushed. They believe saving a few minutes is worth the risk. Being in too much of a hurry can lead to missed signals and poor decisions. Drivers should plan ahead and leave early rather than running the risk of running red lights.

Road rage

Frustration from long waits can push drivers to ignore red lights. Aggressive drivers are much more likely to take risks and endanger others. Unfortunately, this is a significant issue in the U.S., and it is a cause of injuries that is rapidly increasing

If you have been injured by a driver who ran a red light, you may be entitled to personal injury compensation. Seek legal guidance to clarify your options.
